Preparing for Winter-Weather Outages Thanks to our hard-working crews, year-round maintenance and 24/7 monitoring of the grid, we keep customers' lights on 99.96% of the time. But winter weather, such as severe winds and heavy snow on trees and power lines, can cause lengthy outages. To ensure you're ready for any outage — short or long — we suggest preparing a home outage kit with items like flashlights, bottled water and blankets. You can also sign up to receive alerts for outages impacting your home through My Account. |  | Stay Back from Downed Power Lines If you encounter a downed power line — possibly from high winds or falling trees — stay back at least 100 feet. Always assume it has live energy running through it, and call 911 or Idaho Power at 208-388-2323 or 1-800-488-6151 (tip: plan ahead by adding us as a contact in your phone). If you see someone else touch a downed power line, do not touch or attempt to rescue them, or you may become a victim yourself.
Car accidents with power poles are also a leading cause of power outages and downed lines. Safe driving can help avoid these accidents, but if you do find yourself with a downed power line on your vehicle, stay inside until help arrives.
