For most women pregnancy is a very special, even sacred time in their lives. The very idea that there is a brand new life developing inside the body of a woman is an awe inspiring idea. During this time, the body of the pregnant woman prepares itself for the development and delivery of this new baby and many changes occur. Amongst others, women start to produce milk. By breastfeeding Asheville NC mothers gives their babies a chance of gaining a head start in life.

Experts agree that a newborn baby should be given breast milk within an hour after being born. In general, mothers are advised to feed their babies as often and as much as the baby wants. In most cases, the baby will need to be fed every three hours. Mothers can even pump their own milk in case they cannot be available when the baby needs to be fed.

Breast milk is a true miracle of nature. It contains every nutrient that the newborn baby can possibly need. Fat, sugar, water and protein are all perfectly balance to make sure that the baby needs no other form of nutrition. The first few days after birth is especially important. The breast milk is then called colostrum, which is vital to prevent jaundice and to develop the immune system of the baby.

There are numerous advantages to be had in nursing newborn babies. The milk from their mothers not only feed them, but also protect them against developing potentially serious conditions such as diarrhoea and a variety of infections. Babies being fed breast milk is much less likely to develop allergies, asthma and diabetes, to name just a few example.

Nursing offer many other benefits too. Childcare experts all agree that close physical contact between the mother and the newborn baby is of vital importance. It provides the baby with a sense of security and the importance of bonding between the mother and the baby simply cannot be overemphasized. Babies that nurse are less likely to cry often and they adapt to their environment quicker.

It is not just the baby that benefits from nursing. The mother also gains many advantages. Mothers that nurse are much less likely to develop breast cancer, arthritis and many types of heart disease. Nursing delays the return of menstruation and fertility, giving the new mother a well earned break and allowing her body to recuperate. Nursing mothers also stand less of a chance to develop after birth depression.

In some cases it may be better not to feed babies breast milk. If others use recreational drugs, abuse alcohol or use certain types of medication their milk may actually harm their babies. The best route is to get medical advice if one is not sure. Medical conditions seldom, however, precludes women from feeding their babies breast milk.

Few images are as touching and loving as a mother nursing a newborn infant. One of the greatest gifts mothers can give their new babies is their own milk. Some women are afraid of stretch marks and other side effects of nursing but it is the best interest of the baby that should always be of paramount importance.
