What Is Involved In Reverse Vasectomy

By Jason Murphy

It is possible that vasectomy is reversed but the surgical procedure involved is complex. For the process, a doctor will block or cut tubes which are called the vas deferens. These are the tubes which carry sperms to the penis from the testis. For that process, a doctor rejoins the tubes to enable sperms to reach the semen that is ejaculated. There are two techniques that can be used for those that want to reverse vasectomy.

The first procedure is through vasovasostomy in which the doctor sews the vas deferens from the testes right to the penis. The second procedure is known as vasoepididymostomy. In this procedure, there is attachment of the vas deferens to a small organ that is at the back of every testicle which holds sperms. It is more difficult than a vasovasostomy. Doctors prefer it when the patient is unable to have a vasovasostomy or if they think it will not work.

The reversal treatments are done from clinics or hospitals. There is administration of anesthesia which ensures that patients never feel any pain for the procedure. It is a process that takes between 2 to 4 hours, enabling a patient to go back home on the same day. Vasectomies are able to get reversed severally. Nevertheless, the success rate is reduced with each successive reversal.

There are a number of reasons for people to reverse the process. There are those that might have changed their mind as regards having a family or they want more kids. Also, there are men who may have lost kids and could consider having more children. Some men also go for reversal after the advice of their doctors. It is done to minimize testicle pain. The pain is normally caused by previous vasectomies.

There are some possible side effects of the procedure. There might be bleeding in the scrotum that could lead to swelling. In order to avoid that, the orders of the doctor should be followed before and after surgery. It is also possible that one can get an infection but that will be easily treated using antibiotics. For some patients, there will be severe or persistent pain. This will need intervention of the doctor.

You will know the treatment worked if there are sperms in semen, which happens after some months. The doctor will collect samples which are then examined for four to six months. The time is enough for sperm count to stabilize. In case of vasovasostomy, it could take some six to twelve months for stabilization of sperms. If one underwent vasoepididymostomy, it takes longer. The time difference might be considerable.

After sperms have come back, chances of conception might increase. The level of success of the process is dependent on various things. These include type of surgical procedure one had in the past and whether some factors are keeping the other partner from conceiving.

The procedure should not affect sex life. However, one should not have sex or ejaculate until the doctor gives an all clear. In many cases, one has to wait 2 to 3 weeks.
