Important Facts About Newborn Circumcision

By Freida Michael

Parents need to make a tough choice after and even before they receive their bundle of joy. Before taking the baby boy home they have to decide whether he should get circumcised or not. It is the act of surgically removing the foreskin of the penis so as to expose the end of it. Some parents have it simple because the choice is based on religious beliefs. For others, the choice is a little more difficult since they have to weigh all the benefits against all the cons before they decide. Newborn circumcision is a decision that has to be made after talking to the doctors.

For those families where all the men are circumcised the parents of a baby boy might felt feel the pressure to circumcise their child so that they look like all the men in his life. Some other parents claim they do it to their child for hygiene reasons. There are two options available to such parents. The first one is to have it done in the hospital or at home. The decision is left to the parent.

There are some cases where the doctor can choose not to perform the procedure some of these special incidences include when the baby is born prematurely. This would be a very risky procedure for such kids because the doctor has to put them under anesthesia. The other incident is when the child has a serious medical condition that might cause the risks to be higher.

They might also post pone the process if the baby was born prematurely as this can be very risky. Some other parents are usually worried that the doctors will cut it too short or too long. Both of which are a bad thing. If it is cut too short it could lead to dis-figuration of a penis and the child might need reconstruction surgery and if it is cut too long he might need the procedure redone.

Some of the things that could go wrong with this procedure include the excessive bleeding that can be dangerous for the baby. Also the child might develop an infection if proper care is not taken. These two are rare but there is a slight chance that they might happen and it is the reason that most mothers and fathers shy away from it.

Others refuse to do it to protect the penis. When and if the fore skin is removed, the tip of the penis may become irritated. This might cause the urinary opening to become smaller than usually. This is followed by urination problems. To correct these problems they might need to take them to hospital for surgery which might be expensive.

If the parents do decide to go ahead with the procedure they have to take good care of their son. To avoid infections they have to change the diaper of the child very often. This is so that the urine and the stool do not cause infections. If the doctor had used gauze to cover the top, make sure that a fresh one is used after changing the diaper.

Whichever decision is made parents have to talk to their doctors in Toronto, ON to get all the facts. Before they can make an informed decision for their child.
